A freezer can keep you provided with meat, fish and vegetables for months. But who actually covers the resulting damage if the freezer suddenly fails and the food spoils?

Suppose you are planning a barbecue party and buy meat, vegetables and ice cream for the guests well in advance. You store the goods in the freezer with the intention of defrosting the food later. Something that many people do not know: if you have taken out a home contents insurance with, the frozen food is covered by the insurance. This is because the insurance not only covers well-known events, such as fire and theft, but also a number of other incidents that do not involve paying for additional options.

The cause determines the coverage

The home contents insurance covers perishable goods if the cooling device suffers a technical defect or if the public power supply fails. In other words, the damage is covered if you are not personally responsible for the failure of the freezer.

Maintenance and care recommended

As with a car, a freezer also sometimes requires a small service. Regular defrosting (at least 1-2 times per year), in particular, helps to extend the life of the device, improve cooling performance and reduce power consumption. If a thick layer of ice has formed in the freezer, a baking tray or pan should be placed on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator to catch the water. Placing a hot bowl of water in the freezer also saves time with regard to defrosting: the steam loosens the ice, thereby allowing it to be carefully removed. It is not recommended to spend hours defrosting a freezer using a blow dryer. After all, the defrosting is primarily intended to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.

A thorough cleaning of the freezer at the same time is recommended – preferably in the winter when you can temporarily store the food on the balcony. And finally, the freezer should be set to the optimal cooling temperature of minus 18 degrees and coated with a thin layer of cooking oil. This coating helps to delay the formation of new layers of ice.
